Co-Founder of Equinix Joins Programmable Internet Project NOIA Network
William B. Norton — the co-founder of Equinix — has joined NOIA Network as one of its core team members and founders in a high-profile addition to the impressive roster of experts supporting the ambitious Internet startup.
“As perhaps one of the most knowledgeable people in the internet peering business, Bill is leading the strategy and implementation for building NOIA’s backbone to reach eyeball networks within milliseconds while providing large bandwidth capacity for enterprise networks,” detailed NOIA Network co-founder, Domantas Jaskunas, in the team’s blog announcement.
Norton comes from a distinguished background in the history of the Internet, beginning his career at the Network Operations Center for NSFNET, the forerunner to the modern commercial Internet. Following his early days with the Network Operations Center, Norton moved on to NANOG, where he honed skills as one of the world’s foremost experts on Internet peering technologies.
His experience consequently led him to publish a slew of highly cited white papers as well as a successful book — The Internet Peering Playbook: Connecting to the Core of the Internet.
A significant portion of Norton’s work corresponds directly to the initiative of NOIA Network, who is building a new Internet backbone based on the convergence of segment routing (SR), IPv6, and blockchains.
“NOIA brings the wisdom of crowds and Segment Routing technology to the Internet,” detailed Norton in the blog announcement. “Internet users with good connectivity share their spare bandwidth and receive cryptocurrency for doing so. Participants measure and use those alternative network paths through the Internet, enabling congestion bypass.”
Norton’s recent work, articulated in an upcoming whitepaper, is congruent with NOIA’s technical overview and is expected to serve as the basis for the networking infrastructure and sharing economy future that NOIA is projecting their solution will cover.
“Much like Waze routed cars to alternative routes to bypass congested highways, machine learning will dynamically adjust the topology of contributed network segments to optimize routing for its participants,” says Norton. “The entire community benefits from better Internet connectivity, and blockchain handles the settlement between participants.”
At a high level, NOIA has designed a distributed, P2P content delivery network (CDN) administered by a blockchain, which functions as the single source of truth reconciliation amongst a fragmented set of BGP protocols. Contrary to most blockchain-based solutions in the industry, NOIA is seeking to restructure some of the Internet’s core infrastructure at the application layer, such as BGP.
BGP is subject to daily hijacks, and has been identified as a network-level vulnerability in bitcoin’s security model. NOIA intends to circumvent BGP shortcomings through what they refer to as the “Programmable Internet,” a series of developments that improve bandwidth and connectivity robustness.
“We created a technology which empowers regular people’s computers to cache data and utilize their unused bandwidth to speed up data delivery for content providers,” details Jaskunas. “We’re excited to have Bill on board, and are ready to contribute to the evolution in the Internet’s infrastructure.”
The projects internal token, NOIA, is scheduled for a exchange listing on KuCoin on July 22nd.
