Wikipedia Deletes Cardano Page, Hoskinson Accuses the Website of Censorship

Cardano founder and IOHK CEO Charles Hoskinson expressed his disappointment with Wikipedia’s refusal to list a Cardano page. In a video on Periscope, Hoskinson says he found that the online encyclopedia considers Cardano lacks credibility.

Moreover, considering Cardano’s scientific credentials, Hoskinson says there is more at play than only poor source data on the project.

Wikipedia Content Requires Verifiable Data

Wikipedia was established back in 2001 by Internet entrepreneurs Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger. It has since been ranked as the number one website in the reference materials segment, having a massive influence on the Internet landscape.

What makes it different from most other such websites is that anyone can create and edit articles; still, numerous protections were placed to protect the content and the ecosystem because of page vandalism.

John Lubbock, the Communications Coordinator at Wikipedia UK, said the platform is being built on existing knowledge.

“For a new Wikipedia page to be allowed to stay, or for edits to an existing page to stick, there have to be verifiable sources for the information, be they directly linkable primary sources already on the internet, or references to printed information in books or magazines,” he said.

The Scientific Approach to Cryptography

Wikipedia’s determination to delete Cardano’s page has attracted heavy criticism from Hoskinson and not only. Discussing with Wales on the issue, Hoskinson mentioned that academic references and citations count for nothing in his experience, but Wales disagreed.

With that, Hoskinson enumerated Cardano’s vast array of academic achievements since it was established: “There are over 75 academic papers that are related, more than 50 directly related to Cardano, over 2,500 citations. We were the second most cited collection of scientific papers, in the last five years, security and cryptography and computer science.”

Also, Hoskinson pointed out that academic journals, governments, and mainstream publications, including Bloomberg, The Wall Street Journal, and Forbes, have all publicized the project’s research and achievements.

As such, Hoskinson questions why Wales didn’t consider these as credible sources and called him out for lying about the situation.

Irrelevant of personal views about Cardano, it is clear that Wikipedia’s listing policy is not consistent. Considering Cardano’s strong scientific credibility, there may be more to this story that Wales is acknowledging.

After all the fuss, Wikipedia reportedly restored the Cardano page, according to a tweet by Charles Hoskinson.
