On the official website, we can see the following:

The European Commission is introducing a “single currency package” that includes two proposals to guarantee seamless access and usage of euro banknotes and coins for both individuals and businesses across the euro area.

It also outlines a framework for a potential new digital version of the euro that could be issued by the European Central Bank in the future, in addition to physical cash.

The same notes revealed the fact that for over two decades, the euro has served as a powerful symbol of Europe’s unity and resilience.

Throughout the eurozone and beyond, individuals and enterprises have grown accustomed to using euro coins and banknotes for transactions.

While 60% of individuals surveyed express a desire to retain the option of paying with cash, an increasing number are opting for digital payment options, such as cards and applications offered by banks and other digital and financial institutions.

The notes also stated this: “To reflect these trends, the Commission proposes two sets of measures to ensure that people have both payment options available when they want to pay with central bank money – physical and digital euro. The package includes a legislative proposal establishing the legal framework for a possible digital euro as a complement to euro banknotes and coins. It will ensure that people and businesses have an additional choice – on top of current private options – that allows them to pay digitally with a widely accepted, cheap, secure and resilient form of public money in the euro area.”

Once the European Parliament and Council approve the proposition to create a legal framework for the digital euro, it will be up to the European Central Bank to determine when and if to release the digital currency.

The proposal also involves a legislative plan to safeguard the status of euro cash as legal tender, guaranteeing it is accepted as a payment method and remains easily accessible for individuals and businesses throughout the eurozone.
