New Monero Hack Program Reportedly Generated Almost $1.7 Million Per Year
Monero has been making headlines recently due to various achievements, and the privacy-oriented coin was also able to jump a few positions on CMC.
Monero (XMR) enthusiasts were excited to see that during the past few days Monero surged and the positive sentiment came back into the crypto market.
XMR was able to surpass Tron (TRX), Cardano (ADA) and Stellar (XLM), and the privacy-oriented coin is still occupying the tenth position on CoinMarketCap.
XMR is currently trading in the red on CMC, and it's priced at $92.58 at the moment of writing this article.
Monero is in the news again. The leading cybersecurity firm Carbon Black revealed yesterday that there’s a new component that’s used in combination with the 2018 Monero crypto-mining botnet by hackers for metadata seizure.
Coinfomania said that the malware attack coming from theming hackers which “constitute the well-known crypto mining botnet and the new metadata collecting software is classified as “Access Mining.”
Malware is evolving and has hidden purposes
This discovery shows a more important trend of commodity malware that’s evolving to mask another purpose.
The report revealed that the hackers are employing new tactics in order to breach into system database to access and capture private info such as usernames, IPs and passwords as well.
The online publication mentioned above notes that according to this report, “about 500,000 computers were affected by the Monero crypto-jacking mining protocol, XMRig, which collected 8,900 Monero, with most of the victims residing in Eastern Europe, Russia, and the Asian Pacific.”
The informait5on collected is reportedly sold on the Dark Web. In other words, anonymous mining hackers are most likely turning to metadata seizures as a source of income.
“A single infected machine could sell at an average of $6.75 on the dark web markets, as per the report. Hence, the 500,000 calculatedly is worth $1.69 million,” says the online magazine.
